Removals Checklist
Two months before the move
We recommend getting the planning process underway two months before the big move. Ideally, you should book time off work as soon as your moving date is confirmed. Even if you’re not due to be working on the day itself, chances are you’ll have many removal-related tasks to attend to before and after the move. Not only will you need time to ensure everything is fully prepared for your move, but you’ll also need a day or two to unpack and settle in after it.
The first steps to take
The initial planning and preparation stages can include obtaining packaging materials for your move. These can include bubble wrap, cardboard boxes, tape, or anything else that you might need. Are there any items that you no longer need? This is a great time to declutter, so throw away, sell, or give away any goods that you don’t want, use, or need anymore. This can help you lighten your load considerably and help you reduce any storage worries in your new home.
Six weeks before the move
It’s a good idea to hire your professional removals company around six weeks before your move. Removals companies’ diaries can fill up quickly, so give yourself plenty of time so you can secure the quality service that you need. At Darvills and Benns, we work closely alongside you to create a removals strategy that meets your needs perfectly. No two clients or customers are ever quite the same. By gaining a detailed understanding of your needs, we can identify the best way to help you.
Other important steps
Some of our clients use our storage facilities to house goods including furniture before, during, and after the move. Let us know if you require these. Assess every room in your house to decide which items you want to take with you, if there’s anything you want to put into storage, and if you wish to sell or dispose of any goods. Decide where the items you’re taking with you will go when they reach your new property. This makes everything so much easier for you when you arrive at your new location. Let us know about the decisions you’ve made so we can place your goods in the right position in your new home.
Four weeks before the move
Make an inventory of all the items you’re taking with you around four weeks before the move. At this point, it’s sensible to start packing items you’re not likely to use before your move. These can include DVDs, ornaments, and seasonal goods that you don’t need access to at this time of year.
Further packing tasks
You should begin the remainder of the packing process around a week before your removal. Pack everything other than the items you plan to use during your last few days in your current home. Make sure items are packed in boxes with similar, related goods. These boxes should be clearly marked so you know what the contents are. By ensuring items are packed with similar goods, you can shorten the unpacking process. Important, sensitive documents should be packed in a secure box. Once you have completed these tasks, you can begin deep cleaning your home so it’s ready for the next resident or residents. Some of the most important deep cleaning tasks include defrosting the freezer and cleaning your oven.
The day before your big move
You should pack all remaining items on the day before the move. Clothes, toiletries, snacks, and other items that you are likely to need in the next 24 hours should be packed in an overnight bag. Keep the keys to your new home in a safe place so you can easily access them as soon as you reach the property.
The day of the move
On the day of the move, sit back and leave the vast majority of the work to the removals team. Don’t hesitate to provide any further instructions that you may have to avoid problems on the big day. Take one last look around your old property to ensure nothing has been left behind. Tell the removals team where you want everything to go when you get to your new home. Once all your possessions are inside, you can take a deep breath, put the kettle on, and relax for a while before the unpacking process begins.
