things to do in Halifax

Piece Hall Halifax

Piece Hall is undoubtedly one of Halifax’s leading attractions. The 18th-century cloth hall is located in the heart of the town and houses an impressive array of shops, bars, and restaurants. There’s also a heritage centre and an art gallery hosting visual art exhibitions. There’s something for everyone to enjoy at Piece Hall, making it a popular day out for individuals, couples, and families alike.

Shibden Hall

Shibden Hall is a Grade II listed house in Shibden, not far from Halifax. The 15th-century building has been modified over the years, although the Tudor half-timbered frontage continues to be its most recognisable feature. The famous diarist Anne Lister once lived in the house. Lister was dubbed as the ”first modern lesbian”, with her story explored in the BBC drama series ‘Gentleman Jack’ written by Sally Wainwright. Shibden Hall is a great day out for all the family.

Shibden Park

Whilst visiting Shibden Hall, wh

y not have a stroll around the beautiful Shibden Park? The park is very scenic and has lots of kid-friendly activities. There’s a boating lake where you can go for a trip on a rowing boat, a miniature train, a large kids’ play area, and a coffee shop. The park is also dog-friendly, making it the ideal place to walk your furry friend. Shibden Park also hosts many craft fairs, workshops, and concerts throughout the summer months.

Eureka! The National Children’s Museum

How to downsize

Eureka! The National Children’s Museum is one of the top interactive children’s museums in the country. With a focus on learning through play, it’s a great educational day out for kids of all ages. There are as many as 400 exhibits to explore, in six different zones. Eureka! was established in 1992 and has gone on to become one of the best family-friendly attractions in Halifax. Popular exhibits include All About Me, which deals with the human body, and the Wonder Walk, which is a fun-packed sensory trail. There’s also the Beach, which is a huge sandpit outside the museum, for kids to enjoy. A visit to Eureka! is undoubtedly one of the top things to do in Halifax.

Halifax Minster

Halifax Minster is well worth a visit whilst exploring the town. Once a parish church, it achieved minster status in 2009 in recognition of its importance to the area’s civic and religious life. The church was constructed in the 15th century, although it was actually built much earlier on the site of a Norman church. Perhaps the most striking feature of Halifax Minster is its Gothic font cover, which was made to stop people stealing water from the font.

The Jungle Experience at Manor Heath Park

Top things to do in Halifax

The Jungle Experience at Manor Heath Park is not to be missed. Here you’ll find a tropical greenhouse containing an impressive range of plants from all across the world, including Orchids, Bird of Paradise, and Banana Plants. You’ll walk across wooden walkways over streams where you can spot various fish and terrapin. The Time Zone takes you through 400 million years of history, with plants dating right back to the age of the dinosaurs. The Butterfly Zone has tropical butterflies that fly around freely as they source nectar from the flowers. The Jungle Experience is only £1, which is a real bargain for this fun and educational family day out.

Calderdale Industrial Museum

Dedicated to the area’s rich industrial heritage, the Calderdale Industrial Museum is a fantastic educational day out. Set within a 19th-century weaving mill, it contains several working machines that were built between 1850-1930 and all of which were either constructed or used in Halifax. You’ll find ‘Sadie’ in the basement – a large oil engine that’s responsible for powering many of the museum’s drills, lathes, and planes. There are also a number of exhibits about the different industries within the Calderdale area, including coal mining, textiles, and quarrying. There are few better ways to learn about the region’s industrial history than a visit to Calderdale Industrial Museum.
