Packing Tips: How to Successfully Pack Your Electronics

Posted on by Darvills

As some of the more expensive and fragile belongings in your home, packing your electronics properly prior to storage or removal is an absolutely essential measure you need to carry out to ensure they don’t get damaged or require big payouts to repair or replace. That’s why, in this month’s article, we’ll be looking at the best ways to pack your electronics before shipping or moving them in order to give you full peace of mind!

Arranging wires

As the means by which the equipment is powered, the cables and wires going into your electronics must be properly arranged to stop them from suffering breakages. If the cables can be detached from the hardware then do so, and wrap them up and store them, labelled, separately for the safety of both the hardware and the cables.

Disassemble your electronics

Further to detaching your power cables from your electronics, you should disassemble your hardware if possible. For instance, if you are transporting a printer that was already in use, before packing it away you should remove the ink from the printer to ensure that it doesn’t leak and compromise the machine. Other things that need to be disassembled include stands and frames; not only may they break during transit if you don’t take them apart, they will also be more difficult to pack away in the first place!

Temperature & static

Electronic equipment can be delicate, with them particularly sensitive to the effects of temperature and static. Packaging, therefore, must be capable of insulating electronics from these detrimental effects. Static especially can cause damage to batteries, significantly shortening their lifespan. Consequently, you must choose the right packaging materials for electronics.

High quality packing materials

You should also definitely ask your removals company if they supply high quality packing materials that you could utilise. As professionals, they will be well in the know as to what the best materials for electronic equipment packaging are, and be able to supply it to you at a fraction of the cost you could expect to be charged elsewhere. Materials would include packing tape, bubble wrap and reinforced boxes. While some people may choose to reuse old boxes to transport their belongings during a move, it is often the case that these boxes have deteriorated over time, their structural integrity has been compromised, and therefore, ideally, new boxes must be used for removing electronics.

Keep a checklist

Organisation is key when packing up your belongings for a move, and therefore you should create a checklist so that you know where and how your stuff is packed. The unknown element in any situation is often the thing that invokes the most stress in us, but the benefit of a checklist is that you’ll be in control. You should properly label all packaging so you know what exactly it contains and add this information to your checklist.

Insurance

Moreover, keeping a checklist is great for insurance purposes. Using the checklist will mean you’ll be able to scan quickly through your list and boxes to ensure nothing has gone missing. But this isn’t all you need to do to guarantee your insurance claims, should you need to make any, will be granted. You should also look up the current market price of your goods and note their value on your checklist. Photographing all of your electronics (as well as the rest of your stuff) will help to provide evidence that prior to the move your belongings were in full working condition.
