Declutter Your Home to Start the New Year Fresh!
25th January 2017Throughout the year, we accumulate a large amount of clutter in our homes, most often not even realising we’re hoarding useless things until they’re almost on top of us. A cluttered home isn’t exactly a great way to start the new year fresh, so in this month’s article, we’ll be showing you how to declutter your home ready for the new year ahead!
Organise and Sort Through Decorations
As you begin taking down your Christmas tree and decorations, don’t just throw them all willy nilly into their boxes and forget about them until next year – sort through them and organise everything properly! By diligently packing your decorations, you can make it easier for yourself next year when it comes to unpacking them again.
It’s also worth weighing whether or not you actually want to keep certain decorations. Worn and dated decorations should be jettisoned, either by recycling at a charity shop or repurposing them as cleaning cloths, for instance. Ultimately, you’ll see a vast reduction in the amount of Christmas clutter in your home!
Show No Mercy
When you start decluttering your home, you need to be as relentless as possible with it all. If you haven’t used an item for over a year and don’t plan on doing so in the near future, you need to be rid of it. Essential items like screwdrivers may not have been used but would come in handy at some point, but other things like old magazines aren’t useful. Approach all items in your home with this mindset.
Similarly, you should also recycle any old carrier bags. The introduction of the 5p charge on carrier bags may have cut the amount of bags lying around the house, but in a year they can still mount up and take over a cupboard you could use for more effective storage!
Clean as You Declutter
As you begin to declutter your home in earnest, be sure to clean as you go. It’s never too early to start a spot of spring cleaning, and as you declutter your home you can get into tighter crevices that were inaccessible to you before. Basic cleaning includes dusting and vacuuming, but you may also decide to shampoo your carpet, too.
Set up a Toy Library for a Tidy Home
If you’re sick and tired of tripping up over your children’s toys lying all over the house, a toy library system could be just the ticket. Collect all the toys together and only let your children play with them on a loan-like basis: if they want to play with another toy, they have to bring back any toys that are currently out. Over time, you’ll notice which toys your children no longer play with. You can then ask them if they’d like to keep them or not, then send any unwanted toys to the charity shop!
Consider Self Storage
No matter how ruthless you are during your declutter, there will always be items leftover you simply can’t part with. However, just because you can’t part with them it doesn’t mean that they have to keep cluttering up your home – consider self storage instead!
Self storage is an efficient solution for problems with space, allowing you to put large amounts of items into safe and secure storage so you can reclaim all areas of your home. Christmas decorations are just one thing you could store; you could also store family heirlooms like furniture, or even your old record collection – the possibilities are endless!
