Top Tips for Decluttering Before Moving House

Posted on by Darvills

Mountains of clothes, countless draws full of cutlery and glassware, not to mention appliances and furniture – it can be difficult to know where to start when deciding to organising your belongings for moving house. By following these tips to help declutter your home before a big move, you can make the process a lot easier and more streamlined.

Be organised
You’ll have likely set a date for your move, and if you would like to be as organised as possible, you should start making a plan for your packing and moving as soon as you this date is set. This will reduce the chance of confusion and stress later on in the process as you struggle to remember where things go or where you have put them. Use this time to decide what you want to take with you, what you want to throw away and what you want to sell or give away to charity, rather than unpacking at your new home to find a pile of things you don’t actually want.

Call in favours
Getting help from friends and family during your moving process can be invaluable – whether it’s help with packing or the transporting of your belongings to your new home, any assistance can be of a great help to you. This help can also leave you free to concentrate on other, more pressing tasks such as paperwork or phone calls to service providers or estate agents.

Don’t be overly sentimental
We’ve all been there – when it comes to getting rid of our belongings, it can be easy to keep things you don’t need or use simply because they’ve been around for a while and it can be tough to put them in the bin or give them away. It is important that you prevent yourself from being overly sentimental about your possessions before you start the sorting process, otherwise you may end up with an unmanageable amount of boxes!

Categorise your items
Keep, throw away, sell, donate: these are the four categories that your items should be sorted into in order to help you cut down on the amount of packing you need to do before the move. This is best done well in advance of the move itself, and remember, as mentioned above, you must be ruthless with your choices – don’t keep anything just for the sake of it!

Visualise your new home
This can help you decide what is needed and what isn’t, what takes packing priority and what can be left until last. This can be particularly useful for large items like furniture and appliances – if it won’t suit your home or fit in a room, then it might be time to sell it or give it away.

The above tips are designed to help you enjoy a streamlined, efficient house move without giving yourself any unnecessary stress to deal with on the big day. By following these points, you can settle into your new home quickly, safe in the knowledge that everything is organised and sorted as it should be.
